For its 25th anniversary, the Ladies Day Tarpon Tournament Committee has selected the artwork of Brendan Coudal to represent the Tournament. Brendan’s newest painting is titled “Bubbly Mermaid” — she’s a beautiful mermaid holding a bottle of champagne, flanked by a Tarpon, and she was the perfect choice for this historic event! This marks the 5th time Brendan’s artwork has been selected to represent the Tournament — the only artist, to date, to hold this honor! His retro-inspired style has been very popular with tournament anglers, sponsors and the community-at-large.
The first retro-style gal Brendan painted in 2007 was called “Boca Belle” (a blond beauty and her cute Beagle catching a Tarpon, with the iconic Boca Grande Lighthouse in the background) which was selected to represent the Ladies Day Tarpon Tournament in 2008. After that, his “Round ‘Em Up”, “Boca Beauties” and “A Doggone Good Catch” followed. All were hugely popular, fun images of pretty women (or mermaids!) with Tarpon.
When Brendan considered submitting for this year’s event, he had a celebratory theme in mind. “The Ladies Day Tournament is the unofficial kickoff to Tarpon season and those lady anglers really know how to have a good time and catch fish! What better way to celebrate a milestone year than to uncork a big bottle of champagne?!”
Brendan and his wife Nicole work from their home studio in Nokomis. His primary genre is saltwater fish, and Tarpon is one of his favorite species to paint (and catch). Brendan migrated toward mid-century style after seeing the work of the great pinup artists. He knew he was onto something when his paintings eventually combined pretty, retro-styled gals with saltwater fish! Today, he is one of a handful of artists painting in the footsteps of those pinup masters whose work dominated the art world during the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s. The artist enjoys fishing and diving and can often be found near a school of Tarpon somewhere in Southwest Florida! When he’s not painting or fishing, he’s writing, playing the ukulele and traveling. You can see more of Brendan’s work on his website at www.BrendanCoudal.com.
This year’s Limited Edition/Signed posters are available for sale at the Chamber. Brendan’s posters have been known to sell out quickly, so, be sure to get yours while they last!
