The Boca Grande Area Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Fund is a non-profit corporation established by the Chamber to administer its scholarship fund-raising and awards. Recipients receive monetary assistance for college tuition, vocational training and special education.
To say that this is very important to many of our students is an understatement: These scholarships are vital in maintaining financial viability for our students in order to continue with their education.
Every year the scholarship committee meets and determines which students who have applied meet the necessary qualifications, and scholarships in the amount of $500 to $1,000 are granted. We also grant one $10,000 scholarship as well, to a student who shows exceptional need and, at the same time, shows true dedication to their studies and personal integrity as well.
Qualified candidates must have a 3.0 GPA or higher and present their SAT and ACT scores to the scholarship committee. Off-island candidates must have a definitive tie to Gasparilla Island, whether they were born and raised here, they have a parent that works on the island or the candidate works on the island. A candidate can also find a sponsor business on the island who will write a letter to the scholarship committee explaining why the candidate should qualify.
Current recipients attend a wide variety of schools ranging from Florida State to the United States Naval Academy.
Many have been named to the Dean’s List, gone on to graduate school, and became physicians, scientists and teachers.
The education of our youth is a most important investment for our community – and the future. Our biggest fundraiser for the scholarship fund is the Boca Grande Chamber of Commerce Golf Scramble, which takes place most years at The Gasparilla Inn & Club. Any extra help from the community is greatly appreciated though, so please consider a tax-deductible contribution.
